To help international students in China gain an in-depth understanding of the nation’s ecological civilization efforts, and to cultivate a new generation of global youth with strong awareness in “protecting ecology, cherishing resources, and safeguarding the environment,” the “Green Poyang Lake · Ecological Action” — “Perception of China” Nanchang University International Student Ecological Civilization Practice Camp was successfully held in Gongqingcheng, Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province. Nearly 30 international students from Russia, Vietnam, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Zambia, Afghanistan, Togo, Chad, Yemen, and other countries participated in a two-day immersive journey exploring ecology, culture, and the spirit of perseverance.

Immersive Understanding: From Lakeshore Reclamation to Ecological Model
The practice camp first visited the Gongqingcheng City Museum and the Jiangxi Ecological Civilization Exhibition Hall. Guided by museum narrators, the students gained a structured understanding of the transformation of the Poyang Lake Basin — from a past characterized by “competition between humans and birds for food” to today’s “harmony between people and nature” — as well as Jiangxi Province’s remarkable achievements in basin governance, migratory bird protection, and green development. MEHR POOR SAMIULLAH from Afghanistan (Chinese name: Shang Ming) remarked: “Through the vivid displays filled with graphics and historical relics, I learned about Poyang Lake’s ecological and economic importance. It not only plays a vital role in environmental protection but also serves as a major driver for local economic development. Here, I truly witnessed how China upholds sustainable development — balancing ecological conservation with economic growth to achieve mutual success.”

Interactive Engagement: Understanding China Through Everyday Life
The practice camp was not only a feast of ecological learning but also a cultural exploration into the daily fabric of Chinese society. A special Chinese culinary experience was arranged, where students prepared the classic dishes “Stir-fried Tomato and Eggs” and “Shredded Potatoes with Sour and Spicy Flavor” under the guidance of local residents. From washing and chopping to stir-frying, the kitchen was filled with delightful aromas and laughter.

Resonant Inheritance: Youthful Passion in Song and Dance
“We are volunteer pioneers, raising the banner high as we march toward challenges…” Accompanied by the passionate melody of The Song of Gongqing Reclamation, international students, singing in enthusiastic yet imperfect Chinese, learned this spirited anthem filled with youthful memory. Afterwards, they eagerly participated in traditional activities such as wheelbarrow-pushing and learned the “Tractor Dance,” a folk dance inspired by the reclamation era — using rhythmic, powerful movements to connect with that fiery period of youth across time and space.

In addition, inside the Creative Workshop at the Gongqing Reclamation Culture Experience Park, the students took part in a uniquely Poyang-Lake handicraft activity — feather painting. Using naturally shed feathers of migratory birds as raw materials, they crafted vivid scenes of white cranes and the lake’s magnificent scenery under instructors’ guidance. YAGSHYGELDIYEVA AYGUL from Turkmenistan (Chinese name: Aiguli) shared with excitement: “I never imagined that feathers could be used for painting — it’s absolutely magical! Feathers that birds naturally shed are given a new life. This is not only art, but also the gentlest expression of ecological protection. It helped me understand the true meaning of turning waste into treasure!”

This practice camp was meticulously organized by the International Education College of Nanchang University and serves as a key component of the “Perception of China” social practice series. By integrating ecological study, cultural immersion, and the inheritance of a hardworking spirit, the program provides international students with a vivid window into China’s development philosophy — that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets.” It also plants the seeds of green development deep in their hearts as they gain a clearer understanding of China’s modern path forward.
